On the Charlotte mural tour: Sharon Dowell, thinking about coexistence
Sharon Dowell, teaching artist for Community School of the Arts and our Promoting Peace class was featured in The Charlotte Observer. Her mural titled “Halcyon Idyll” can be found under the 11th Street CATS underpass. Inspired by the cities growth, constant construction, and the balance of nature. Dowell worked on a mural with our Promoting Peace class, also mentioned in the article. Promoting Peace workshops are designed to help heal the divide between vulnerable young people and the officers who patrol their neighborhoods. The program works to improve community relations by giving police officers and teenagers alike a place to come together, connect and give voice to their feelings. Each workshop focuses on creating open dialogue and addressing social justice issues through collaborative art. In the coming months, a public mural that incorporates the art created through Promoting Peace is planned for display in Uptown Charlotte.
“Another mural project is coming to fruition soon: A collage of drawings Dowell helped create through The Arts Empowerment Project (TAEP), in a project in which teens and police officers drew together.” – The Charlotte Observer
