Community School of the Arts Presents “We Are the Arts: An Evening of Music and Visual Art”

Concert will feature Charlotte Children’s Choir, CSA Chamber Players, and a live digital painting by a CSA faculty member.

Community School of the Arts (CSA) is pleased to present “We Are the Arts: An Evening of Music and Visual Art” at 7:00 pm on Saturday, April 30, 2016 in the McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square. The ticketed event will showcase music and visual artwork by over 130 CSA students and will highlight many components of the School’s programming, including the Charlotte Children’s Choir (CCC). Following the performances, guests will enjoy a reception and gallery opening for the CSA art exhibition in the Knight Gallery, also at Spirit Square.

The 55 choral students in grades 2 through 12 of the Charlotte Children’s Choir of Community School of the Arts will perform songs from a variety of musical styles. From Serbian dance tune to American jazz, art song to Irish mouth music, there will be something for everyone at this event.

In addition to the Charlotte Children’s Choir, the CSA Chamber Players, a group of chamber ensembles and private music students at the School, will be performing throughout the program. They will perform with the Charlotte Children’s Choir, as well as playing chamber music, including an original composition by CSA faculty member Isaac Brockshus. The concert will additionally pair some musical performances with live digital paintings by CSA artist Jonathan Grauel. The audience will experience both visual art and music components simultaneously, as the projected live painting will complement the music.

After the concert, guests are invited to CSA’s Student/Faculty Art Exhibition opening, which will feature work from students of all ages. The show will include painting, drawing, and mixed media collage work from a number of CSA programs, like Get Ready with Words, School Ready with Art, The Arts Empowerment Project, Gang Alternative Principles, summer camps, private art lessons, and workshops with CMS schools. Over 50 individual student artists and faculty members will contribute to the exhibit, as well as collaborative projects featuring the creative work of over 500 area school children and families who participate in various programs. Of special interest will this year will be the figurative paintings and mixed media drawings by our 2015-2016 Visual Art Scholarship recipient, Jewel Ham. Jewel is a graduating senior at Mallard Creek High School and plans to attend Howard University in Washington, DC in the fall, majoring in Visual Art and Communications.

Additionally, before and after the concert, there will be a collaborative art project sponsored by the Charlotte chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF), who has partnered with CSA on multiple projects, supply drives, and outreach efforts throughout this school year. The collaborative painting created on April 30th will be turned into a billboard, which has been donated to CSA by the AAF, Adams Outdoor, and Camel City Posters.

“We Are the Arts: An Evening of Music and Visual Art” is at 7:00 pm on Saturday, April 30, 2016 in the McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square. Tickets can be purchased for $10 for adults and $7 for children under 12 through Carolina Tix.
